if you didn’t realise something in a book you read or movie you saw or post you reblogged was racist, that doesn’t mean it wasn’t. Just because you didn’t pick up on it doesn’t mean it isn’t there. You don’t share the experiences of poc, but this is their lane and they know how they feel. As white people, it is essential that we listen to them. Their voices need to be heard, and the privilege white people hold needs to be used to help carry their voices further. The experiences, feelings, safety, representation, and lives of poc matter more than your pride or favourite author/content creator/character/etc. It isn’t your place to deny them the right to speak up for what they know. It isn’t your place to argue with them over it. We need to think critically and learn to do better, to be better, to practice vigilance, and to actively put effort into these things. As allys, we need to listen and let them be heard, by ourselves and by others who might otherwise disregard them. Speak up with poc and don’t pretend none of this is happening, because it is. They can’t just log out of this, and we shouldn’t either. This is about Them, but it isn’t just their fight.
